Historical Bike Ride Through Arlington Heights New Event Provides Family Fun and Exercise

Arlington Heights is ripe with diverse parkscapes, meandering bike paths and fascinating local history.  If you have ever wanted to learn more about the historical significance of your hometown, get your bike tuned up and get in gear to ride in the inaugural Arlington Heights Historical Museum's Historical Bike Ride onSunday, May 2 from 1:30-4:30pm.

Biking is one of the most family friendly sports for youngsters, families and passionate bikers alike.  The Historic Bike Ride is a 4-mile ride that begins and ends at the Historical Museum campus located at 110 W. Fremont St.  The route takes you past homes, buildings and parks that have played integral roles throughout Arlington Heights' history. Two stops of particular interest are the Wheeling Township Cemetery and Memorial Park.  Wheeling Township Cemetery on Euclid Avenue holds the history of early Arlington Heights.  The names of our town founders and the symbolism that lays within can be explored with the help from materials provided by the Museum.  Memorial Park, the oldest park in Arlington Heights, is a memorial to both living and fallen veterans and their families.  Thanks to the recent efforts of the Arlington Heights Parks Foundation, Memorial park is now being restored purely through the good works of volunteers.

Families are encouraged to participate.  Refreshments and a goodie bag will be handed out to participants.  The route is appropriate for school age children and adults of all ages.  Participants must bring their own bikes.  Bike helmets are required.  The cost is $3 for adults, $5 for non-residents and children are free. Pre-registration is encouraged and registration is available online and at any park district community center.  Please use class code 1366-5. The event takes place rain or shine.

Want to know more about building and businesses that were once part of our town, but can no longer be found here?  Visit the Heritage Gallery's current exhibit, "Gone, but not forgotten: Lost Arlington Heights" which is open from 1:30-4:30pm.
