Champion System's Will Clarke Wins Tour Down Under Stage 2!

Fuji's First World Tour Win of 2012!

(Philadelphia, PA) January 18, 2011 - From an end-of-the-season Grand Tour victory to a first-of-the-year World Tour win, Fuji proved today - perhaps more than ever - that it belongs in the pro peloton.

Staying away for an entire stage, Will Clarke - racing for Uni-SA (University of South Australia national team) before joining his Champion System teammates - triumphantly crossed the Tour Down Under's Stage 2 finish line Wednesday atop his Fuji SST 3.0: a bike he received just days before the start of the race from Fuji distributor Oceania Bicycles.

Oceania Managing Director David Hall couldn't be more thrilled with the win, not only for what it means for the country but what it means for the Fuji brand.

"We are ecstatic that an Aussie won right here on home turf. Clarke wowed the world today with such a dominant and inspired ride. Everyone at Fuji Australia is very proud and feels as if we played a little part in this great victory."

He added, "What I think is really worth noting is that the frame and fork Clarke raced on are the stock frame from an SST 3.0 - a mid-level bike that is clearly ready to win at the Pro Tour level."

Clarke broke away from the peloton only 1 kilometer into the 148-km stage from Lobethal to Stirling.

The initial break consisted of Clarke and Martin Kohler of BMC. While Kohler ate up the initial sprint points, Clarke claimed victory on the Category 2 Lenswood climb and then dropped Kohler, pushing ahead solo.

His lead peaked at a remarkable 12 minutes and heading into the final circuit, he retained a more than 10-minute lead.

While it significantly diminished in the final lap, an exhausted Clarke refused to give up. As the finish line came into sight, he was greeted by what many called a "hero's welcome," an eruption of cheers for the underdog who left an unsuspecting peloton in the dust.

The 26-year-old's first-ever victory on the World Tour stage, Clarke called the win simply "unbelievable" and the "biggest win of his career." He now leads both the Sprints Classification and the KOM heading into the Tour's final four stages.

"What a great way to start the season. The first of many wins, I hope," said Champion System General Manager Ed Beamon.

This is the second time Fuji has won a stage at the Tour Down Under, the first under Manuel Cardoso in Stage 3 of the TDU 2010. Both Cardoso and Clarke won aboard Fuji's aero carbon bike, the SST.

I am a fan of the Fat Cyclist. I read his blog, follow him on twitter, and appreciate his work against cancer.
My Brother in Law lives not far from Elden Nelson's part of Utah, and even raced against him in the Tour deDonut
He recently wrote a book and was kind enough to send me a copy. He even signed it, and I don't think it was the same signature he used for everyone, because he used the word "Awesome" which I tend to use.
So I finally managed to finish reading the book, and figured I would make with the review:

Comedian Mastermind: This is essentially a compilation of blog posts. With clever additions where Elden deems it necessary. You don't have to be a Fat Cyclist to read and enjoy it (although I am, and I did). You are likely to get more out of it if you or someone you spend a lot of time with rides.
Lots of opportunities to laugh out loud, and more then once I considered going to the blog to find the posts just so I could comment on them.
Definitely worth mentioning, the "Best Cake in the World" Recipe, is not misnamed. It really is yumtastic.
To sum it up: Buy this book. Fatty is cool, it's entertaining, cake is good

Our latest build:
another Surly. This one is a CrossCheck. Well appointed with SRAM Force group and handbuilt wheels (velocity rims, DTSwiss spokes, shimano hubs). We gussied her up with Profile Design Carbon Bars, stem, & seat post. And the cherry on top is a fizik saddle with matching tape.
The proud owner plans to race with it. He's a member of Team W2. I hear he's pretty fast, so watch out.

Error in Judgment, Wheel Review

Thought I’d share a story from Tif’s Tri life:

Last weekend she was preparing to do the Schaumburg “Splash, Pedal, Dash” and I was tasked with insuring her bike was up to snuff.

Her rear tire was looking pretty threadbare, so it I figured that I should replace it. But while I was looking for a tire for her, I decided I’d go one better and let her use the Easton EC70SL’s with Continental GrandPrix 4000’s from my road bike. Replacing the Stock wheels that came with her entry level sport road bike

We then did a fitting, and ensured everything else was dialed in.

Her first ride on the wheels was the race (not a good idea, generally, but what are you gonna do?)

Her comment was that it was like angels singing when she got on her bike. Fast rolling, smooth, and peppy.

She set a Personal record on all 3 portions of the tri. Attributing the bike success to the wheels.

And now, she’s threating to not give them back

I love my wife, but come on…. They are Easton Carbon Wheels

Someone started a National Bike Registry Non Profit, with some backing from the fine folks over at Kryptonite (the lock company). Called Bike Revolution. It's worth a look. It's free to register!
An important part of the system is registering your bike and Serial number. And you can add to it, by getting these great super sticky decals with the fancy new SmartPhone ID Tags. Any shop or Law Officer that sees a bike with the tag is likely to scan it, to insure ownership.

The Arlington Heights Bicycle Club is pleased to announce participation in the international Ride of Silence on May 18, 2011 . The Ride of Silence is an international event to honor those who have been injured or killed while bicycling on public roadways. All cyclists are encouraged to join wherever they live or work. Rides are planned for 300 cities and 7 continents worldwide. All Ride of Silence locations are locally organized.

The ride is 7:00PM on Wednesday May 18, 2011 and is a 10 mile loop; starting and ending location is Recreation Park, 500 E Miner St, Arlington Heights, Illinois at 7:00PM on Wednesday May 18, 2011. Please plan to arrive at 6:30PM so we may start at the appointed hour.

Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In Arlington Heights we ride to honor those who have been killed or injured while cycling; we ride to remind the public that cyclists have the right to share the roads; and we ride to remind ourselves to ride safely and with respect for motorists.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. Arlington Heights has participated in the Ride of Silence each year since 2005. 2011 will make our 7th year. 2010 was a record year with 125 participants.

Cyclists who are unable to participate in Arlington Heights are encouraged to participate in one of the other Illinois rides in Chicago, Bartlett, Downers Grove, Evanston, Peoria, or Urbana (http://www.rideofsilence.org/chicago/)

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

Custom Builds: Ride Report

Last year I built up a Surly Travelers Check for a fellow (more details, here, & here).

He was kind enough to send along a ride report which I thought would be fun to share:

Gentlemen; I thought of both of you this weekend, riding over the cobbles on the tour de flanders course. Although my wrists were sore and my hands were numb, the bike held up in style. Couplers, tires, wheels, all a go. Peter, nice work. We rode the 75K option and loved every moment. Eurokit cyclists were out sporting their best. Unbelievable how many cyclists were out on the course. Pics will be forthcoming. We rode on sat and watched the big boys on sun. George H took 6th. If you look on steephilltv site and the crowd on the Muur-Kapelmuur, you can see some of our group (orange tee in the middle) although I am just out of frame to the left as you look at it. The climb the day before was fun. Euro-nummie in front of me pulls a domino effect and I ended up w/a gouge on my leg and finishing the climb running my bike. Fun anyway. I learned cobbles are much better tolerated while climbing. A new appreciation for the grueling tour circuit. Pretty cool.

I'll send some pics now that the bike season may be upon us.

Oh, rode w/a buddy last week in semi driving rain. Tires and brakes worked great. Totally confident in the wet. Like the fenders.

Congrats & Good Luck!

As you may know, tomorrow will be the last day our dear friends Bobby and Andrea will be the owners of "the Riv". Congratulations to Bobby and Andrea on over 30 years in business. What an accomplishment!
As a resident of Arlington Heights, Riviera has been an institution for me and my family. Like many parents, Riviera was always the special restaurant where I could take my small children for lunch after practice, a snack for a good report card or a good quick meal when I didn't time to cook. Riviera was the first place my daughters were able to go "alone"...with a pack of friend from school. I was always comforted by the fact that I knew they would be safe there, and equally important, that they would behave appropriately. The Kids all loved the Riv, and knew they had to behave to be able to stay. How many kids in this town hiked to the Riv on the First or last day of school to celebrate? I think almost all of them!
As a business owner Bobby and Andrea have been true inspirations. They are one of the hardest working couples that I know. They have offered words of wisdom and encouragement to me and many business owners in Downtown. Arlington Heights is the city of Good Neighbors at both home and at work. And as business neighbors, from keeping their business vibrant, supporting the other businesses and maintaining integrity in their business, they are among the best neighbors a business could have.
Thank you Bobby and Andrea for your support that you have given me and Urban Harvest, for your kindness and your friendship. Thank you for the Oasis that you created for my family and my children. Critical Mass Gets Nasty in Brasil

What do you do when the road in front of you is blocked? Drive around, or barrel through? This Gentleman, with his son in the car, decided to barrel through, a group of 100 or so cyclists.
I generally like to keep this blog pretty upbeat, but every now and then something comes along I feel compelled to share
Drivers and Cyclists the world over have varying opinions of Critical Mass. Love or hate, most would agree, this is pretty awful.

Road Side Repairs for Triathletes and Racers

This hands on class will teach participants about Quick bicycle repairs for while out on the course. Learn how to repair tires and tubes, cables, chains, and fit adjustments. The Class will also explain how to ride a bike safely according to the Illinois Bicyclist Rules of the road.
All Students will receive a tire repair kit, a bicycle multi-use tool and a copy of the Illinois Bicyclist Rules of the Road Manual.
Classes will be held at Olympic Indoor Swim Center, Wednesday January 12, 19, 26 at 7pm.

Cruiser Multi Stage Project, Final Build

Here she is, painted, lubed, cleaned and refreshed.
Duane over at Chester Cycles did a great job as usual.
I replaced the Saddle and Grips with something more plush,
And rebuilt the rear wheel around a new Shimano Coaster Brake hub, and new spokes, since the old Bendix hubs are hard to get parts for.

The Arlington Hts police have a "found" Trek Discovery road bike in their possession that they would really like to get back to the owner. Has a Village Cycle sticker on it so it's got to be someone in the area but they say the shop wasn't able to track it by the serial number. So...
if it's yours (and you can prove it), go get it. If not, please pass this along anyway you can to other cyclists and clubs you have access to. I'm sure getting this back would make someones year!!

Vintage Schwinn for Sale

Here we have nice little vintage town bike, a Schwinn Traveler (probably from 1983): 19” Lugged Steel Step Through frame (measured center to center). It’s about 32” from the top of the lowest saddle placement to the ground. 12 speed SunTour AR Shifters, Mated to some Shimano Thumb Shifter (obviously not original parts). 27” Japanese Made Sunshine wheels, “Schwinn approved” Center Pull Caliper Brake up front, Diacompe Caliper in back. Sugino 170mm Double Cranks. Awesome Schwinn Saddle.

All this for just $200.00.

Sure you can find this bike cheaper elsewhere, but not one that was just cleaned and “tuned” and with: New Cables, Housing, Tires, and brake pads.

FUJI BICYCLES TO SPONSOR GEOX-TMC IN 2011

PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 25, 2010) Fuji Bicycles officially announces today that it will sponsor the new professional cycling team Geox-TMC in 2011 as part of a multi-year agreement between the team, supported by Italian shoe manufacturer Geox and TMC Transformers - a leading brand in electric cast resin transformers - and the U.S.-based bicycle manufacturer.

In an agreement signed in August between Geox president Mario Moretti Polegato and Footon-Servetto general manager Mauro Gianetti, the Italian shoe company will take over as primary sponsor of Gianetti's current squad. TMC transformer company soon stepped up as the second-name sponsor and Fuji Bicycles will continue as bike supplier. Geox will also have a women's team in 2011 with Fuji Bicycles as bike supplier. Additionally, Geox will support a Belgian-American amateur squad (in 2010 Fuji Test Team) that will serve as the professional team's satellite program.

Pat Cunnane, President of Advanced Sports International, parent company of Fuji Bicycles, said the new sponsorship agreement is a positive step forward for the Fuji Bicycle brand. "We have worked with Mauro Gianetti for several years now as sponsors of the Fuji-Servetto and Footon-Servetto teams and we are very pleased to partner with him again for 2011 and beyond," said Cunnane.

"The power of racing in the Pro Tour has clearly been a major benefit to our brands (Fuji and Oval Concepts), as well as to our suppliers' brands," Cunnane continued. "We've shown our products can survive the rigors and daily punishment of the Tour de France, the cobbles of the Tour of Flanders and other major races under some of the best riders in the world. The Geox-TMC pro squad as well as the amateur team will be riding Fuji's new ultralight road bike, the innovative Altamira. The elite women's team, formerly the Safi-Pasta Zara team based in Italy, will be racing on Fuji's new women's-specific carbon road model, the Supreme. All three teams will race on Fuji's D-6 time trial bike.

Holiday Weekend Hours Summary:
Sat 4/03, 10am - 7pm (ish)
Sun 4/04, 10am - 4pm
Mon 4/05, 8am - 4pm

Explanation: If it's really quiet Saturday Night, I might close a little early to get over to the racetrack and watch the fireworks. If its busy I'll keep working.
We are going to be open for most of our regular daily hours on Sunday the 4th, But we will be opening a bit late, due to Tif and I running the Frontier Days Stampede Run. Prob around 10.
We will be open regular hours on Monday the 5th, unless it's compleatly dead, then we might just go for a ride.

Art Fest this weekend

So this weekend starts our exciting summer events in DownTown
Arlington Heights. Which means it's a great time to come down and see
cool stuff. It also means parking is a little nutty. The Vail St
Garage should still be open.
We will try to make it worth the trip if you come down, we still have
a few 09 bikes in stock. And we are pricing them to sell
